Who is a candidate for the procedure?
Potential candidates for turbinate radioablation are patients who suffer from chronic nasal obstruction due to enlarged inferior turbinates. Those suffering from chronic sinusitis or structural nasal problems (i.e. a grossly deviated septum) in addition to turbinate hypertrophy are candidates for the procedure, however they will require additional treatment for sinus or structural ailments.

These are common symptoms of nasal and sinus trouble. The nose and sinuses can be obstructed by a variety of problems such as chronic or recurrent infection or sinusitis, traumatic deformities of the nose and septum, deviation of the septum, allergic swelling of nasal and sinus tissues and structures, polyps and rarely tumors. These problems can lead to sinus obstruction and chronic infection, which can cause pain, pressure and chronic nasal discharge.

Research indicates that following turbinate treatment, patients may no longer need to rely on these common modalities. Improved nasal breathing and reduced snoring are expected to occur within eight weeks after treatment. 

How can nasal blockage cause chronic otitis media? (Earache & inflammation) The Eustachian tube equalizes pressure between the middle ear and the outside environment. Acute blockage of the Eustachian tube (as from a cold) can result in an ear infection, and long standing Eustachian tube blockage can result in persistent fluid in the middle ear, perhaps associated with hearing loss. If hearing loss occurs at a critical time in development, speech delays may result.

What are the effects of nasal congestion and mouth breathing on jaw development?
Long standing nasal obstruction can interfere with normal development of facial bones. This can also interfere with tooth alignment, causing orthodontic problems. Sometimes a child's nose is congested and obstructed to the point that he or she breathes through the mouth while sleeping. If the congestion is left untreated, this mouth breathing forces air currents through the mouth. The force of the air then changes the facial bone growth. The face may actually become abnormally elongated, causing the teeth to come in at an improper angle and creating an overbite or open bite.

Is there any correlation between sleep apnea and nasal congestion?
Nighttime nasal obstruction can interfere with normal sleep. Adults and children deprived of normal sleep may have excessive daytime sleepiness or even experience behavior changes. Obstructive sleep apnea is a more serious disorder of sleep caused by nasal obstruction. Characteristic symptoms are loud snoring, restless sleep and irregular breathing, daytime sleepiness, and behavior changes, such as irritability and difficulty concentrating. It can also result in high blood pressure and heart problems.
